Education Team Committee Update Jennifer Benjamin – March 2008 The Victorian Health Education Team have returned from their February visit to HCMC. See team report below. This year we had a great team of 42 participating in our two-week program. The team was mostly nurses but also included 1 doctor, 2 dieticians and a couple of excellent admin people to help us run the show. We sent teams to work alongside our Vietnamese counterparts, deliver in-service programs and run a seminar in each of the 6 hospitals we visit. Seminar topics included Research, Trauma, Ventilation, Triage, Cardiac Surgery, Nutrition, and Nursing Care of specific Tubes. The program culminated with a morning conference on Nursing Management at the HCMC Health Service. The conference was opened by the Director of the Health Service and Mr Mal Skelly, the Australian Consular General to Vietnam. Both Vietnamese and Australian Nurses present three topics from their countries perspective so it proves a great tool in learning about each other’s Health Care systems. Once again we were assisted in our work by a group of 17 students from RMIT University Vietnam who have become invaluable to our team, providing us with translation. As well as their language skills, they also share insight into their culture. We love having these students, who show great enthusiasm for their role. A new inclusion to this year’s team was 8 students and a lecturer from the RMIT Australia School of Nursing. RMIT is celebrating 120 years and participation in this trip formed part of their celebrations. All students prepared lectures and participated in the program and gave our trip another perspective. Of course we enjoyed sightseeing, shopping and sampling the local food in our “down time”. We attended a function of the Australian Consulate, helping to celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations. Others visited the leprosy centre and an orphanage. We held our annual party, which was a well-attended event, culminating in the usual singing and dancing. We have returned to Australia with a list of suggestions for topics to begin planning next year’s program.

Nui Dat Kindy Stage 2 Project
The Nui Dat Kindy (“Child Care Centre”, above), Stage 1 was built with the aid of AVVRG funds in 2003. Stage 2 ( planned for construction to commence in 2008 ) the will see the addition of a kitchen, toilet and security fence, which will allow the local communities to fully utilise the facility. The contribution to this project by the Australian public is significant in that the village of Nui Dat is now considered by a whole generation of baby boomers and their families to be, the “Spiritual Home” for the 59,000 odd servicemen and women who served in Vietnam during the 10 year conflict of the 60,s and 70,s. [June 2008]
Project Update - March 2008 Following the December AVVRG/ NSW sub-committee meeting, chairman Mike O’Hara said, “ He was pleased with the decision, that the state sub-committee had identified the Nui Dat Kindy extension, as a worthy project to adopt.” The scope of work to be considered is, the erection of a security fence, upgrade toilet block and install a kitchen. Furthermore he added, “ that three committee members had volunteered to go to Vietnam in the New Year and meet with the relevant local authorities in order to get the project moving ”. In February, the delegation, led by Sydney barrister Liz Olsson SC, Dr Phillip Briggs (Architect) and NSW member Kerry Phelan travelled to Vung Tau where they were joined by AVVRG Vice President Malcolm Parker and Kathleen. An initial informal meeting was held in The Grand Hotel with Ms Hang, Vice Chairman of the UFO (Union of Friendship Organization) see photograph: Kathleen Parker, Liz Olsson, Dr Phillip Briggs, Malcolm Parker, Ms Hang & Kerry Phelan.
The outcome of the meeting was to proceed with the project, subject to the original plans (prepared by the Baria peoples committee engineer in 2006) being amended and an MOU being agreed to. Dr Phillip Briggs has been able to expedite the process in liaising directly with the Baria peoples committee engineer and has prepared a draft set of plans (See attached), yet to be finalised.
In other news the NSW sub-committee held a Charity Golf Day on the 4th March and was successful in raising sufficient funds to commit to the planned Kindy Project . A further fundraising event in Sydney is planned for October. March 2008 |
